The Philippines boasts a diverse set of options for where you can eat. There’s no shortage of sources, from family-owned karinderya and independent online sellers to fine dining establishments and digital chain grocers.

The food industry in the Philippines makes up around half of the country’s manufacturing output. It also had over USD 25 billion in retail sales in 2021. It’s no exaggeration to say that besides providing sustenance to millions of Filipinos, the food and beverage (F&B) industry is also vital to the country’s economy.

But who are the driving forces behind such a massive sector? F&B restaurants and retail services rely on manufacturers to produce the ingredients for all their recipes. Knowing who these key players are provides a clearer picture of the industry and how it works. This list of leading Philippine food companies can help you navigate the F&B sector better, especially if you’re considering starting an F&B business

The Top Food Manufacturing Companies in the Philippines

Meet the key players in the Philippine food manufacturing scene. These companies help shape the local F&B industry, supplying the ingredients and products found in most meals and beverages across the nation.

1. Nestlé Philippines

Nestlé Philippines is a subsidiary of Nestlé S.A, the largest food company in the world. The company established itself in the Philippines in 1911, initially selling imported goods. After a brief suspension during World War II and facing strict importation control, Nestlé partnered with San Miguel Corporation to create its first factory in 1960.

Nowadays, Nestlé is a household name in the Philippines; you likely have some of their products lining your shelves and refrigerators. The corporation has a diverse selection but primarily focuses on milk and milk-adjacent products, like coffee, creamer, and chocolates. Notable products include KitKat, Nescafe instant coffee, and Milo.

2. Alaska Milk Corporation

Wilfred Uytengsu Sr. founded Alaska Milk Corporation (AMC) in 1972 as Holland Milk Products, Inc. The company steadily grew under Uytengsu's leadership, who was replaced by Wilfred Uytengsu Jr. in 2007. The year 2012 saw the return of AMC to its previous parent company, FrieslandCampina, but under the continued leadership of Uytengsu Jr.

AMC is a relatively recent contender for the top milk company in the country, with a line focusing on dairy products like evaporated, condensed, powdered, and fresh milk, and culinary creams. Many families and food providers rely on Alaska milk products for their meals and menu items.

3. Pepsi Philippines

A United States Air Force service member started Pepsi’s history in the Philippines. John Clarkin established Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of the Philippine Islands Ltd in 1946 to import the products of its parent company, PepsiCo. Eventually, a local group called Pepsi-Cola Distributors acquired the company in 1985, making the brand we know today.

Pepsi products focus on drinks, with their namesake carbonated soft drinks as a prime example. Others include Mug and Lipton. They’re also the only distributor of PepsiCo subsidiary Frito-Lay, which gives them access to various chips, like Cheetos and Ruffles. Gatherings and restaurants nationwide feature PepsiCo products thanks to Pepsi Philippines.

4. Universal Robina Corporation

Universal Robina Corporation (URC) began as a corn milling plant called Universal Corn Products in 1954. While its initial focus was on corn-based snacks, it expanded into the coffee business with its flagship mix: Blend 45. Today, URC has three primary arms: branded snacks and beverages, animal products and agriculture, and sugar and flour production.

URC’s most well-known products are probably the Jack ‘n Jill line of chips, including Chippy and Chiz Curls, and drinks like the previously mentioned Blend 45 and the C2 tea line. Besides their consumer-facing goods, they’ve significantly contributed to the farming and animal industries. Their sugar and flour are also in many of the tasty pastries you can enjoy today.

5. RFM Corporation

RFM Corp, formerly Republic Flour Mills, began in 1958 under the guidance of soon-to-be business magnates like Salvador Araneta. As the name implies, it was initially a flour manufacturer but soon expanded its product line to include flour mixes for baked goods like pancakes.

Today, RFM has a stake in many food and beverage types. It’s still one of the largest flour producers with brands like Republic Special, White King as its primary cake mix line, and Royal for pasta. Besides flour products, RFM offers Sunkist Juice, Selecta Ice Cream, and milk goods besides flour products.

6. Monde Nissin

Monde Nissin began in 1979 with its first product, biscuits and wafers. While moderately successful, its instant noodles, Lucky Me!, propelled it to household-name status a decade later. The company has since expanded into many different food and beverage sub sectors under its president and cofounder, Betty Ang.

Monde Nissin’s product line has grown beyond the biscuits and wafers such as SkyFlakes and Fita. Besides the previously mentioned Lucky Me! instant noodles, Monde is their famous pastry line. More recently, the company has expanded into meat alternatives by purchasing Quorn.

7. Del Monte Philippines Inc.

The name Del Monte has a potentially confusing history because it can refer to three different entities: Del Monte Pacific Limited (DMPL), Del Monte Corporation (DMC), and Del Monte Philippines Inc (DMPI). The short version is that the founding company, DMC, broke off from DMPL, the parent company of DMPI. A few years ago, DMPL acquired DMC, reuniting the family.

While originally started for pineapple farming, DMPI has become a big player in the fruit product market. The company now produces juices, sauces, condiments, and extracts from various fruit sources, while also offering pasta and other ingredients typically found in Filipino households.

8. Century Pacific Food Inc.

The late Ricardo Po Sr. started a small tuna canning business in 1978 but found that he didn’t have a local market. He wanted to change that by launching his flagship brand, Century Tuna, in 1986. The business stayed in the canned fish industry until expanding to other canned goods.

Today, Century Pacific Foods is one of the country’s largest providers of canned foods. Century Tuna is still a popular product, but it now has Argentina Corned Beef and the Birch Tree canned milk and cream next to it on the grocery shelves. The company recently entered the coconut cream and plant-based meat alternative markets to cater consumers looking for healthy options.

9. San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc.

It’s impossible to list the top food companies in the Philippines without including San Miguel Corporation (SMC). The company entered the food industry with Magnolia ice cream in 1925 after starting as a brewery in 1890. Over a century of specialized experience in the field has rewarded SMC with its standing today as the largest F&B corporation in the country.

The SMC food and beverage subsidiary has three primary specialties: beer, liquor, and food. The brewery is still active today, making your favorite local beers like Red Horse and San Miguel Pale Pilsen. Its liquor arm encompasses the classic Ginebra San Miguel Gin.

Meanwhile, the company contributes to every stage of the food value chain, from animal feeds, fresh meats, processed meats, to ready-to-eat meals, flour, dairy, and biscuits. Magnolia, Purefoods, Monterey, Dari Crème, Star, and La Pacita are among the many trusted household brands for generations of Filipinos around the world.

From Bite-Sized to Big-Time

When savoring a meal or snack, reflecting on its origins is intriguing. It's highly probable that one or more of these esteemed companies played a pivotal role in bringing those flavors to your table.
